Drill and Weight

I had my hands full at work this week, so I did not get to spend a lot of time painting. I did have Monday off though, so I was able to finish one piece.

I went bigger this time, painting on a 20″x24″ canvas. Despite the increased real estate, I was still able keep the fluid style I had with my smaller paintings.
20140221-225743.jpgAfter setting up the still life, I spent about an hour figuring where I wanted to position the items on the canvas.
20140221-225858.jpgInstead of keeping thick layers of paint, I scraped and kept the canvas as smooth as possible. This technique softened my edges and gave me more control over what I wanted appearing sharp. Anything I wanted sharp I painted last. This defined it on the soft background.
20140221-230138.jpgAlmost finished at this stage. Just need to define the darks and add the highlights.
IMG_0107I feel good about this painting. I think it was a step in a new direction. This coming week I’ be able to paint more and I’m excited to see what happens.
